Yarmuth Statement on President Trump's Address to Congress

WASHINGTON – Tonight, Congressman John Yarmuth (KY-03) released the statement below following President Donald Trump’s address to a Joint Session of Congress:

“Speeches can be very important, but they don’t happen in a vacuum. In his first 40 days in office, President Trump has continued to make empty promises on everything from the budget, to health care, to LGBTQ rights, and numerous other areas of national importance. Maybe more disturbing than the promises he has broken are the ones he’s kept. He’s threatened journalists, judges, immigrants, and Muslims and followed through with actions that jeopardize the freedoms guaranteed by the First Amendment.  Tonight, as before, we needed to see that this President wants our trust and that he had found the desire and the discipline to govern. Instead we got a showman, playing for ratings in the United States Capitol. As a country, we went into this speech needing confidence from our President, our Commander in Chief, but we’ve only been given more reason for concern.”
