Yarmuth Statement on Ruling Striking Down Governor Bevin's Medicaid Work Requirements

LOUISVILLE – Today, Congressman John Yarmuth (KY-03) issued the statement below following a Federal judge’s ruling to block Governor Bevin’s Medicaid work requirements.

“Governor Bevin’s efforts to severely limit health care access to Kentucky families hit a welcome roadblock today. The question now is will it drive him to the even more extreme position of terminating health care coverage for more than half a million Kentuckians as he threatened to do. Even the most conservative among us should hope not. In addition to increasing hardships on vulnerable Kentuckians and causing our state to become sicker, making good on his threat would cost the Commonwealth $30 billion in federal funding and tens of thousands of jobs. This is hardly a fiscally responsible position, particularly when you consider that the federal government covers 94 percent of all costs of our Medicaid expansion this year, 93 percent next year, and will cover 90 percent of all costs going forward. Now we’ll see if Governor Bevin is truly guided by any semblance of principles, or if he is using the governorship as only a tool to serve his own partisan political ambitions.”
