Yarmuth Statement on Trump Administration's Dismantling of the Clean Power Plan

WASHINGTON – Congressman John Yarmuth (KY-03) released the statement below after the Trump Administration took official steps to repeal the Clean Power Plan, President Obama’s signature policy to curb greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change.

“At the heart of today’s Clean Power Plan decision is one of the cruelest deceptions perpetrated in politics today: telling the American people that clean air protections are responsible for reduced demand for coal and that getting rid of these protections will create tens of thousands of coal jobs. Both are false. In fact, even President Trump’s own Energy Department just issued a comprehensive report which clearly states that the biggest contributor to coal plant retirements has been cheap, abundant natural gas, not environmental regulations or renewable energy. The facts are clear and by willfully ignoring them, the Trump Administration is jeopardizing our environment, our economy, and—ultimately—our existence. For the sake of future generations, I hope we will be able to fix the damage.”
